The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

Each time a significant honors show approaches, there’s always a clamor for the addition of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the hearts of followers dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague made the case for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Examine these examples from this year’s best games, each quite distinct: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles of a third title. What category would fit them among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur of brilliant puzzle games published annually without proper recognition during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • Another imaginative release missed out in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Only a few logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, but the art behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games stand as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and engaging with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, creating some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
