Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in employing replay technology.

Replay systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice already in place at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of reviews a competitor can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
